Let`s visit together Þingvellir Valley, Geysir area and Gullfoss
What is the Golden Circle? It is needed to be established, because tourists often have a problem with this. The Golden Circle is a route connecting 3 points – the Þingvellir Valley, Geysir area and the largest waterfall in Iceland, that is the Golden Waterfall (in Icelandic Gullfoss). And no, Seljalandsfoss, it’s not on the Golden, neither is Glymur, nor Hraunfossar. It is Golden because of scale of attractions, the number of tourists and from the name – Golden Waterfall. Why it is Circle? These 3 points are actually in a straight line! It is, because when we start from the west and visit these 3 points in the order I mentioned, then from Gullfoss we can head south, to Fludir direction and through Hveragerdi we can return to Reykjavik, from where it is very close to the road leading to Þingvellir. If we do it, the circle will be closed.First of the points I mentioned is the elevation of the joint of two tectonic plates – North American and Eurasian. Þingvellir means Valley of Parliamentarism. It was a place where first Icelandic parliaments were, before the country was conquered by the Kingdom of Denmark. The place is also important for millions of fans of the television series Game of Thrones, shots related to the Eagle’s Nest were taken here. The beautiful place in the valley is the Öxarárfoss waterfall, where heads were once decapitaded …The second point, the Geysir region is a place where there are several geysers, including the most important, legendary Geysir, from whose name – geyser -was given to all similar places in the world. Geysir is already inactive, but it is proudly replaced by Strokkur, which regularly „explodes” every few minutes. You can write a lot about Gullfoss … I will say only that – it is great, huge and cascading. Every second, 400 cubic meters of water are poured through it.
